Shazam! he’s definitely a fun character, and director David F. Sandberg he seems to have had a lot of fun playing with him in the DC Cinematic Universe. The first movie definitely gave fans a much different and lighter tone than the DC movies Zack Snyder he was doing, and fans embraced that fun, upbeat playfulness.
Shazam! he’s decidedly unlike any other character in the DCU, and in a recent interview with SFX magazine, star of the franchise Zechariah Levi he compared the character to Marvel’s Deadpool. I know that might be hard to see, but he explained how he thinks Shazam! is the Deadpool of the DCU:
“We manage to be the most subversive of all the DC characters, almost like DC’s Deadpool. Deadpool can sit outside and comment on everything and have fun with everything obviously in a more mature, R-rated way. We do the same thing, just a little bit. ‘more family-friendly!”
I don’t know, I understand what he’s saying, but I don’t really think about Shazam! it’s something like Deadpool. Sure, he’s out of the DCU to some extent, but that’s about it. The humor and personalities are different, he doesn’t actually offer any commentary on superhero tropes and doesn’t break the fourth wall.
The upcoming movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods, “will continue the story of teenager Billy Batson, who by reciting the magic word ‘SHAZAM!’ is struck by the Living Lightning of the gods and transformed into his adult superhero alter ego, Shazam. He has the powers of six gods: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the endurance of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.
Billy Batson and his adopted brothers, who can all transform into superheroes, leap into action and fight against the Daughters of Atlas to save the world from a weapon that could destroy it. As you will see, this is not an easy feat and Billy starts to doubt himself and if he can really do it.
When it comes to the humor of the film, Angel Asher, who plays Billy, explained that it’s more adult this time around because the actors and characters have grown up a bit: “There’s definitely more adult humor,” he said. “It’s not as kid-friendly as the first film, but we still keep that component a little bit.”
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
