Pixar’s Pete Docter Talks What He Believes Went Wrong With LIGHTYEAR’s Audience Reception

The film Light year it hit theaters last year to mixed reviews. Some people said it was great, some people said it was boring, some people said it was too progressive for a Disney movie, some people were upset that Tim Allen didn’t voice the main character, and I’m sure there have been many more complaints which led to less-than-stellar box office numbers, but a Pixar executive says he believes the reason is that audiences were confused.

While the movie Light year was in History of the toy universe, it was neither a prequel nor a sequel to the fan favorite franchise, but it was the favorite film of the History of the toy Andy character. It was the movie that the Buzz Lightyear toy came from. He explained it clearly at the beginning of the film, but it was still too complex for some to understand.

In a recent interview with TheWrap, Pixar exec Pete Docter opened up about why he believes the film failed to reach a certain audience, saying:

“We did a lot of soul searching on this because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise. I think probably what we concluded in terms of what went wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they say, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex? And then we put them in this sci-fi movie they’re like, What?”

He went on to add:

“Even though they read the material in print, it was just a little too far, both in concept, and in the way the characters were drawn, that they were portrayed. It was so much more than science fiction. And Angus (MacLane, director), to his credit, took it very seriously and genuinely and wanted to portray those characters as real characters. wanted/expected and what we were giving them.”

I took my family to see the movie during a special preview and we all thought the movie was so exciting! It was packed with action and a very realistic sci-fi storyline with very high stakes and characters that were relatable, fun, and easy to love and connect with. It was a blast and I wish people had been able to enjoy it for what it was.
