Steven Spielberg to adapt Stanley Kubrick’s “Napoleon” into a television series for HBO Max

The Berlinale, the Berlin International Film Festival, is held in the German capital from 16 to 26 February, and this Tuesday 21 Steven Spielberg crossed his red carpet to collect the Golden Bear for his career. The director of ‘Jaws’, ‘ET, the Extra-Terrestrial’ and this year’s ‘Los Fabelmans’ held a press conference the same day where he reflected on how the pandemic had prompted him to tell his family story and advanced that he was working on (another) unfinished Stanley Kubrick project.

“The fear I felt because of the pandemic gave me the courage to tell my personal story”, picks up Variety, and it’s that COVID has forced him to deal with some buried trauma, but it’s also given him some time to breathe: “If there was one film I haven’t done yet that I’ve had time to make now, what would it be? The answer has been with me my whole life. I’ve always wanted to tell the story of my mother and father, my sisters and this incredible struggle between art and family. He’s been in all my movies. All my films are very personal and many are about family. But nothing as specific to my experience as ‘The Fabelmans'”. For this, Spielberg is nominated for 3 Oscars: best film, best director and best original screenplay, and the film is also present in the categories of best actress for Michelle Williams, best supporting actor for Judd Hirsch, best production design and best band. original sound.

Furthermore, as anticipated by the director, Joaquin Phoenix and Ridley Scott will not be the only Napoleons that we will see soon. Spielberg confirmed to the media in attendance that he was working on a series for HBO Max based on a script by Stanley Kubrick that was never filmed about the Emperor of the French. He has been talking since 2016 that he could have tackled this project like he did with ‘AI Artificial Intelligence’, another film that Kubrick was originally supposed to direct in the 1970s, but didn’t have enough technology. Cary Fukunaga is expected to be attached to the project as director.

“We are putting together a large production with the collaboration of Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan for HBO based on the original screenplay by Stanley ‘Napoleon’. We worked on it as a seven-episode miniseries.” Presumably Spielberg will act as executive producer, as he does in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate’ or in the new version of ‘The Color Purple’ which Blitz Bazawule will direct.

And in the direction?

Although it was announced that he would direct a film about Frank Bullit, the character of Steve McQueen in ‘Bullit’, with Bradley Cooper, does not seem to be very clear: “I don’t know what I’m going to do next. I have no idea”admitted Spielberg, who has been linking projects together for years. So much so that he started filming ‘The Fabelmans’ even before ‘West Side Story’ hit theaters: “It’s a good feeling, and it’s also a horrible feeling. It’s nice to be able to take back control of my life and make my own decisions, but i need to work and i like to work. That’s the biggest question I’ll be asking myself for the rest of the year.”
