‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ continues its huge collection in its 11th week in theaters, achieving a major feat: to be the third highest-grossing film in history. With three more films confirmed in the saga and a James Cameron of around 70, the director explains why he has no plans to do any Disney+ spin-off of ‘Avatar’.

Cameron gives an interview for the Los Angeles Times in which he reveals and clarifies some of the hidden problems in “Avatar: The Sense of Water” and its future installments. One of the questions on which the interview revolved was the possible new stories that could be released in streaming (particularly on Disney+) about some of the tribe’s most relevant characters. Given this hypothesis, the director is clear: “Enough of streaming […] I don’t think cinema will ever go away because it’s something specific, it’s a pact we make to go and immerse ourselves without distractions. There is something about him that is still sacred.”says Cameron angry at the new methods of mass exploitation in his defense of traditional cinema.
The director’s deep disdain for the new form of exploitation isn’t the only reason Cameron isn’t considering making a new section of films: “Right now, economically speaking, it wouldn’t make sense to bring any of our CG lead characters to Disney+.”clarifies the director of ‘Titanic’. Even in the greatest blockbusters you should keep an eye on your wallet. You have to remember that “Avatar” movies are not cheap to make. In fact, the latest installment has become one of the most expensive movies in history.
Until the press asks him again “in five years” as he himself suggested, we won’t see parallel stories to ‘Avatar’ releasing on Disney+. So we’ll be left to see what the life of Dr. Grace, Sigourney Weaver’s character, was like before the arrogant marine arrived in Pandora, or a story in which we learn the origin of the primitive Tree of Souls and all that it entails.
What do Cameron and Thanos have in common?
Coming from different worlds and even universes, however, the director and the villain have more in common than one might think a priori. Cameron himself is the one who makes this comparison in Time, in it says he agrees with the plan that Thanos carries out in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, kill half of the population: “I have things in common with the bad guy, I thought I had a viable solution”, confesses the director when he talks about the genocide carried out by the titan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems that there are too many people for Cameron for the circumstances in which the world is involved. However, the director reveals the main problem with the theory: “No one’s gonna raise their hand to volunteer to be in the half that’s gotta go”.
