THE MANDALORIAN Producer Says Season 3 Is ‘Biggest’ & ‘Most Ambitious Yet’

The Mandalorian producer and director Rick Famuyiwa is out there advertising Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated third season Star Wars series, and in a recent interview with SFX/GamesRader, offered some insight into what we can expect from the show. He first talks about the growing threat of the Empire, and then promises that this will be the biggest and most ambitious season yet!

When discussing the Empire, it is explained that X-wing pilot Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) is one of the few people in the New Republic who has any inkling that trouble is brewing on the Outer Rim with the Empire. Famuyiwa explains:

“There’s definitely something Teva has been paying attention to in terms of what the Empire might do, so yeah, I think we’re definitely going to see some of that over the course of the season. For now we know Moff Gideon has been taken away, but the forces greater than what might be out there like the remnant Empire still exist.Something that hangs over part of this season is [the question of] what could that element be. There are things going on that our characters may not be aware of, but certainly Teva has some inkling.”

Speaking about the challenge of overcoming what they did with season 2, the director said:

“I think every season tries to tell a simple story that connects. I can say this season was definitely the biggest, most ambitious ever – it was almost insane to try to do everything we tried to do this season – but I think the ambition is just driven by wanting to keep making these stories great. For me, the foundation has always been that simple relationship between Mando and Grogu. The adventures get bigger and the characters you meet could be as iconic as Luke Skywalker, but it’s always in service of that simple story. That’s taken us to bigger and bigger places and, certainly, this season is the biggest ever.”

It’s exciting to hear! I love reading these things because it excites me! This third season sees the journey of Din Djarin (Peter Pascal) and Grogu continue as their adventure takes them to Mandalore where Mondo hopes to be “forgiven for his transgressions”. He also sees Mando move into a leadership position and Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) face the disappointment of not getting Darksaber back.

The Mandalorian’s journeys across the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has rejoined Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to remove the galaxy from its dark history. The Mandalorian will meet old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.

Pascal said in a previous interview: “Three is even better than the previous one.” Sackhoff went on to describe the upcoming episodes as “dark.” Then, there is Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the evil Moff Gideon. He added that the ladder is “bigger than ever … and it’s just an expansion, in many ways, of last season. It’s a season that has big ideas, big teases, and great advice for the future.”

The Mandalorian The third season will premiere on Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
