There was a lot of confusion among DC fans when it was confirmed that Henry Cavill would not be continuing in the company’s plans as Man of Steel, even when the existence of ‘Manf of Steel 2’ was announced. But now, the new head of DC Studios, James Gunn, has come out to clear up the confusion and explain how long the new Superman movie has been in the works.
Through his Instagram Stories, James Gunn confirmed it ‘Superman: Legacy’ It has been in development since before he became head of DC Studios. This was after a headline claimed that the ‘Creatures Commandos’ series for HBO Max had been ‘fast tracked’ due to the manager’s urgent plans. However, Gunn said these titles aren’t as early as many believe.
“It’s not that fast since then [Creature Commandos] and ‘Superman: Legacy’ were in development before we took over DCU Studios,” James Gunn said in his Stories. According to the studio executive, the new movie by Superman “it has always been a separate project”, when asked if it was actually ‘Man of Steel 2’ with Henry Cavill (via The Direct).
In the face of confusion, James Gunn confirms that “Superman: Legacy’ He began to write “More than 6 months ago”, which confirms that this title has been in development for the longest in the director’s mind, even since before Henry Cavill signed his return in ‘Black Adam’ for September 2022.

‘Superman: Legacy’, the most important film of the new EUDC
After the DC Extended Universe reboot in ‘The Flash’, many say the biggest point in the company’s new timeline will be ‘Superman: Legacy’, the biggest film in the director’s announcement as it will feature a younger actor in the role of Superman, and an aspect more related to what fans expect to see from this character.
Additionally, Gunn recently confirmed that his plans with “Superman: Legacy” are to distance himself from the dark version of Zack Snyder, where the Man of Steel broke his maxim rule in his first presentation to the world. Which was sharply criticized by thousands of followers of the superhero.
‘Superman: Legacy’ will be released on July 11, 2025, but according to James Gunn, we could meet the actor who will be in charge of bringing the new version of Clark Kent to life on the big screen this year. So we will have to be careful who is the lucky one chosen to bring the superhero to life.
