The Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey series did very well with only 5 episodes on HBO and HBO Max. But this was not the first time that an attempt was made to adapt the video game Naughty Dog, because in 2014 there was a cinematic attempt that the Sony had cancelled, and that none other than the director of the original trilogy was responsible. from ‘Spiderman’, Sam Raimi.

In an interview for Bussiner insider Tim Rothman head of Sony Pictures Entertainmentrevealed that it regrets canceling the film ‘The Last of Us’. But while he would have loved to see Sam Raimi’s project realized, he believes the best thing for Joel and Ellie’s story was to bring it to the small screen on HBO and HBO Max, to tell their adventure without limits.

Rothman comments that “I wish it would materialize” Sam Raimi’s film ‘The Last of Us’: “But I’m very happy for them (HBO, as well as Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann) and I think it’s the best adapted episode. I’m jealous in the best way,” the Sony Pictures chairman said.

Sony Pictures has been commissioned to make some video game adaptations for the Playstation, such as “Uncharted” with Tom Holland. But ‘The Last of Us’ is Rothman’s favorite title, and for this reason he regrets not being able to stay on the project, but he knows that moving it to the television format was the best thing that could have happened to him.

Why was the movie “The Last of Us” cancelled?

Back in 2014, Neil Druckmann and Sam Raimi were having some creative differences regarding the tone they wanted for the film ‘The Last of Us’. Sony wanted to keep the drama of ‘Children of Men’, while the director of ‘Spiderman’ wanted to change it a bit and make it more like ‘World War Z’, and things started to fall apart.

In an interview with Variety, Druckmann said, “The quick answer is this it didn’t work because the story of The Last of Us is very long. We tried to make a film and it didn’t work because it would have taken more than 15 hours of experience in two”. And he confirmed that “some screenplay proposals didn’t make sense”.

“Even though we removed several characters, Joel and Ellie’s journey felt rushed.” Unlike the show, as “this time, with the series, we could take our time and have a simmering dilemma in the relationship between the protagonists, which is a year’s journey in the game.” Now, ‘The Last of Us’ is waiting for its final episodes, with a second season already confirmed.
