What can you do when a friend who lives in another country comes to your city and doesn’t notify you? Olivia Colman speaks out: adopts a Welsh accent and affectionately recrimes you in a prank phone call while promoting your latest film. Or, at least, that’s what he did with Paul Rudd, his friend of more than two decades, when he found out that he was going to watch the BBC morning show in person.

“Hi Paul. I’m a big fan”begins Colman, who has posed as an Eastern UK woman. Rudd smiles, though it’s unclear if he already senses who’s behind the call. “I wanted to know your opinion: what would you do if you had a great friend for twenty years and this friend, who doesn’t live in England, came to England and didn’t tell you anything about it?”. Rudd listens carefully. “And not only didn’t she tell you about it, but she went on a radio show, what would you do?”. The actor, who begins to see where the filming is going, smiles and repeats to himself: “My God”. Colman continues: “Would you be offended?”. Now Rudd knows exactly who is on the other end of the line, so he jokes: “Personally not. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.”. They both laugh. “Well”he says, forgiving him, but Paul Rudd is embarrassed and doesn’t stop muttering: “My God”.
Then the host of the show, Greg James, invites the actress to introduce herself. Hi Paul, I’m Olivia Colman.reveals. “I know”Rudd replies, blushing. “Jo, you really can do all kinds of accents”. Olivia Colman had the great idea of making fun of her friend while she was listening to the morning episode of BBC 1, thus learning that her friend was visiting England. “I was like ‘what?’ So I emailed Greg and said, ‘Would it be okay if we pranked Paul? And he said, sure!’.
The friendship between the actor and the actress, unknown to most of the public, dates back more than twenty years. “We were acting together and Paul used to hang out on the floor of our dreary flat in South London and come in for Sunday lunch.”says Colmann. He was the protagonist of “Ant-Man” to have the biggest role in the comedy. “Paul was really into comedy, I had two lines I think”. Let’s hope that as soon as the show ends, the actor calls her friend to invite her to a coffee, especially now that they have something else in common: Marvel.

Paul Rudd is already a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but soon Olivia Colman will also make her foray through the miniseries ‘Secret Invasion’, which will arrive this 2023 on Disney+, where the actress plays Special Agent Sonya Falsworth, an old ally of Nick Fury. Who knows! Perhaps this special agent will need the help of the smallest of superheroes to stop a future alien invasion, and thus we would see a reunion of friends on the screen. Everything is to dream…
