Keanu Reeves shares his thoughts on DeepFake and AI technologies. The Matrix Star countered with Tech that he even included a clause in his contract so editors wouldn’t tamper with his show.
“I don’t care if anyone is paying attention during an edit. But in the beginning, early 2000s or maybe it was the 90s, my performance changed,” Reeves said. Wired. “They threw a tear in my face and I was like, ‘Huh?!’ It was like, ‘I don’t even need to be here.’
Reeves continued, “The frustrating thing about it is that you lose your agency. When you’re in a movie, you know you’re going to be cut, but you’re participating. If you go to deep fake country, it doesn’t have any of your views . It’s creepy. It will be interesting to see how people interact with these technologies. They have such cultural, sociological implications and the species is being studied. There is now so much ‘data’ about behavior.”
As technology continues to advance and we’ve all seen the videos of Reeves’ Deep Fake go viral, the actor questions the value of the entertainment industry in the future.
“People are growing up with these instruments: we already listen to music made by AI in the style of Nirvana, there is NFT digital art. It’s cool, see what the cool machines can do! But there is a corporate craze behind it that tries to control these things,” he added. “Culturally, socially we are confronted with the value of real or non-value. And what is being forced upon us? What is presented to us? It’s that sensorium. It’s spectacle. And it is a system of control and manipulation. We sit on our knees and look at cave walls and see the edges and we don’t get a chance to see behind us.”
