Bad weather makes rescue difficult

The earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria occurred on February 6 with a magnitude of Mw 7.8. It has been the deadliest since 1939 and the second strongest in Turkey since at least 1668. It has caused structural damage as far away as Israel, Lebanon and Cyprus. According to records, the quake had more than 1,000 aftershocks, one of them nine hours after the original Mw 7.7 quake. Cold temperatures and a winter storm make rescue missions difficult and leaving many people stranded in the ruins under a layer of snow and in danger of hypothermia. At this point the chances of finding anyone alive are slim, but international teams continue to work and, according to El País, a group of Spanish and Turkish firefighters managed to pull a woman who had remained underwater alive from a building for 140 hours the rubble and also a four-year-old girl trapped for 178 hours.
