One of the great Super Bowl commercials that popped up this weekend was one where General Motors teamed up with Netflix to see Will Ferrell appear in a handful of the most popular Netflix series, including Army of the Dead, Squid game, BridgertonAND Stranger things.

The two companies first announced their partnership with two teaser announcements in early February. In the spot, Ferrell promotes how Netflix productions are using GM’s electric vehicles to lighten their carbon footprint.
Ferrell is thrown through the gauntlet of Netflix content in the commercial, gets bitten by a zombie from Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” and tries to pass for Gaten Matarazzo in a “Stranger Things” spoof. He plays a Squid Game and marches through a courtyard dressed in Bridgerton fashion.
Deborah Wahl, chief marketing officer of General Motors, said of the announcement:
“The more we see EVs appearing in this type of binge-worthy content, the faster everyone will get used to them.”
It would appear that General Motors is doubling down on its efforts to respond to a worsening global climate. Just two years ago, the company promised to develop 30 new EV models by 2025.
According to Wahl, GM’s plan is to continue using TV commercials to increase recognition for new EVs such as the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Cadillac Lyriq. However, the company also plans to use streaming product placement to access consumers.
As of last year, Netflix agreed to a UTA-brokered integration deal that would mean putting at least one EV into every series or movie it directly produced.
