Brendan Fraser recalls having doubts about his Superman audition at the time

Brendan Fraser has revealed he was very hesitant during a fateful audition for the role of Superman.

Appear on The Howard Stern ShowFraser talked about his long-ago effort for the JJ Abrams-proposed film Superman: Fly by, which never went into production. “Everybody in town reads Superman. They tested six or seven guys in 2002 or 2003,” Fraser said.

“Obviously it’s a life-changing, amazing opportunity, but I had to face it: ‘Okay, let’s say you get the job as a man of steel. It will be carved on your tombstone. Do you agree? You will forever be known as the man of steel.” It was kind of a Faustian deal [the] feeling, and I think of course I didn’t want to be known for one thing because I’ve been proud of diversity my whole professional life. I’m not a one trick pony.”

His doubts, he admitted, probably surfaced during his audition.

What Fraser called “gimmicks and studio politics and probably inherent (his reluctance) in my screen test” cost him the role.

He understood. “I guess that’s why you test – they could tell I was only 98% there.”
