To start with one of the oldest on the list, we have ‘Stigmata’, a horror film that would make even the least believer tremble. It premiered in 1999 and follows a girl not close to the Catholic Church, who begins to suffer from the mysterious stigmata suffered by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. God’s exorcism
With a surprising title like this, “The Exorcism of God” is a horror movie that will make you fear even your shadow. This is a Mexican film from the mind of Alejandro Hidalgo and starring María Gabriela de Faría. Saint Maud
One that has become increasingly popular on this subject is A24’s ‘Saint Maud’, directed by Rose Glass, and starring Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle. The story follows Maud, a young nurse who has gone through a rather difficult period, which led her to become a Christian. It is when a dying patient arrives that she becomes obsessed with saving her soul before she reaches the gates of San Pedro. Available on YouTube and Amazon PrimeVideo.
The devil’s door
Since there are few horror films that use the mockumentary format for religious horror theme, it is worth noting how incredibly well ‘The Devil’s Doorsway’ does it. This is a tape by director Aislinn Clarke, which follows two priests who go to an asylum where the nuns experience demonic possession, which they record with their cameras.
