Lindsay Dougherty, chief officer of Hollywood’s Teamsters Local 399 – and the nation’s top film team player – is urging members to save money in case there is a writer’s, actor’s or director’s strike later this year.
In that case, the earliest strike is May 1, when the WGA’s current film and television contract expires. The SAG-AFTRA and DGA contracts both expire on 30 June.
“As many of you know, this year we will see how the SAG-AFTRA, the DGA and the WKV negotiate their framework agreements,” she told her members in the current edition of news reel, the quarterly local magazine. “I want to urge our members to be diligent and prepared and put money aside in case any of these groups are delayed or controversial in negotiations.
“We saw the impact on our members during the 2007-2008 writers’ strike and we know that the changing landscape in our industry and the issues workers in the industry face at work present a new threat of work stoppages.
“Not to scare our members, it’s to remind everyone that in our cyclical industry, the well-being of you and your family is a priority and we want you to be as prepared and protected as possible.”
Lindsay Dougherty, leader of Hollywood’s Teamsters Local 399, sees Union becoming “more militant”.
In addition to her duties as Local 399 Secretary and Treasurer, Dougherty is also Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Western Region and Director of the IBT Motion Picture & Theatrical Trade Division.
