‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ crowns the Spanish box office for the seventh week, ‘Babylon’ and ‘The Whale’ prevail

The ‘Avatar’ phenomenon continues unstoppable and those theories that the sequel would interest no one and would break the bank at the box office are far behind, because ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ continues to roll out almost two months after its premiere. The sequel directed by James Cameron has just risen to fourth place among the highest-grossing films in world history, with 2,117 million dollars to date, of which a good installment belongs to Spain, one of the international markets where it is working best.

In its seventh week on the bill, ‘The sense of water’ has managed to add just over one and a half million euros (1,572,825 euros) to its total, which in our country already amounts to 45.34 million, according to data from Comscore. The film distributed by Disney, available in 328 cinemas, once again obtained the best average over the weekend from 27 to 29 January 2023, with 4,795 euros per theater and a drop of only 22%. However, he is not the only one who holds his teeth on the podium with his teeth, since ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ repeats in second place with €709,799 more, which represents a drop much down 8% compared to last week, in which it raised a very similar figure (€774,307). DreamWorks’ acclaimed sequel, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, is in its sixth week on the bill, becoming another major animated triumph for Universal Pictures, distributors of recent family hits like “The Bad Guys.” or ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’.

The surprise comes from the hand of ‘Babylon’, which, far from collapsing as could be expected after its premiere, remains at number 3, with 450,819 euros more, which takes it above one million in its second week (1,386,699 euros ). ). Damien Chazelle’s divisive new film, starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva Hernández, was a dismal flop in the US, but is having a much warmer reception in Spain, where it is gaining audience attention and has carved out a place for itself in the cinematic conversation.

‘The Whale’ debuts at number 4, propelled by excellent reviews from Brendan Fraser, which begins as a favorite for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards, where Darren Aronofsky’s film is in contention for three statuettes in total (five of the top 10 films are among this year’s nominations, announced last week). The arrival of the aforementioned A24 film drops ‘M3GAN’ to 5 in its fourth week, adding 301,293 euros to its coffers, which already hold 3.23 million euros in Spain for the Blumhouse-produced viral horror.

'The whale'

The British animated film ‘The Amazing Mauritius’ also drops by one position, from 5 to 6, with €243,274 in the second week and a total that already exceeds half a million. You have to go down to 7 to find the second premiere of the week, ‘Tár’, which disappoints with 235,555 euros, despite its six Oscar nominations and the presence of Cate Blanchett. Admittedly, Todd Field’s film had the smallest release in the Top 10 (187 screens), so it’s not bad if we look at its average per theatre: €1,260. Positions 8 and 9 are also occupied by new releases, the horror proposition ‘The Offering’ (€138,302) and the war drama ‘Devotion. A story of heroes’ (€ 124,447). Closes the Top 10 ‘The worst neighbor in the world’. The film starring Tom Hanks totals €122,738 and has collected €2.22 million in five weeks.

‘Decision to Leave’, one of the big no-wins at this year’s Oscars, drops out of the Top 10 in its second week, dropping from 9 to 14. Positions 11 to 20 also include ‘As bestas’ (which occupies the 15th after 12 weeks) or ‘Aftersun’, which accumulates a decent 379,359 euros in total, but continues to generate a good average, being present in just 33 theaters seven weeks after its premiere. Total, the 20 most watched films in Spanish cinemas from January 27 to 29 accumulate €4.92 million. In short, little has changed compared to the previous one, in which the Top 20 added 5.3 million.

Shyamalan is back

We don’t know when the reign of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ will end, but a contender arrives this week who has the ballots to snatch the throne. He opens in theaters on Friday 3 February. ‘A Knock on the Door’, M. Night Shyamalan’s New Movie, Usually Doing Well at the Box Office. Also on the way (three months after UK and US release) ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, the second most nominated film at the Oscars this year (tied with ‘All Quiet Front’), with 9 nominations . it is the first, ‘Everything at once everywhere’ returns to Spanish cinemas to benefit from the attraction of its 11 nominations at the Academy Awards. But there’s more: ‘Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom’, ‘Other People’s Children’, ‘My Friend’s Friend’, ‘Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush’, ‘I have electric dreams’ and ‘The walls speak’ .
