The new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have finally announced their plans for the new DC Universe. The arrival of the two producers at the top of the studio at the end of last year led to a total restructuring of the saga which will mark a before and an after. And with it, changes that leave behind the previous regime, set in motion by Zack Snyder’s superheroes. Of the news about DC that has come to us recently, the most shocking has been the cancellation of the third ‘Wonder Woman’ film and the departure of Henry Cavill from the DC Universe shortly after announcing his return after his cameo in ‘Black Adam’.

The latter caused massive disappointment among fans of Cavill’s version of the Man of Steel, as well as a healthy dose of anger and outrage poured out on Gunn and Safran. A month and a half later, DC executives wanted to defend themselves and clarify they didn’t fire Cavill, clarifying something that was actually already known: that the actor has never been (re)hired beyond his cameo in ‘Black Adam’. “We didn’t fire Henry”Gunn says in statements compiled by Deadline. “Henry was never hired. He made a cameo and that was the end of his story”. “Many people have drawn conclusions that are not true”Keep it up. “But for me, it’s about who I want to cast as Superman and what the directors want for the role”.
Among the projects announced as part of the first phase of the new DC Universe is the reboot of Superman which Gunn already anticipated a few weeks ago, and in which there is simply no room for Cavill, given that it is a new beginning . The film, titled ‘Superman Legacy’ will be released on July 11, 2025 and will work as “The Beginning of the New DC Universe”though it won’t be an origin story, as Safran makes clear: “It centers on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his life as a human. He is the personification of truth, justice and the American way of life. He is goodness in a world that believes goodness is obsolete”. Gunn, who is writing the screenplay for “Superman Legacy” and could even direct it, doesn’t mince words when it comes to explaining why Cavill isn’t part of his plans and thinks Warner Bros. didn’t get him the best deal. : “For me, for this story, he’s not Henry. I like Henry. He’s a good guy. I think he’s been pushed around by a lot of people, including the former regimes of this company. But this Superman isn’t Henry for so many reasons.” »..
And what about Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi and the others?
For many, the cancellation of “Wonder Woman 3” and the end of the Cavill era of Superman sent the message that Gunn and Safran intended to cut their losses from Snyder’s DC, but that may not be the case at all. When asked if there is a possibility that Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi and other artists from the previous phase will return in future projects, Safran assures that the door is open: “There’s no reason why all those people can’t be a part of the DCI, we just haven’t decided what story we want to tell that incorporates Shazam or Aquaman”.
As for Ben Affleck’s Batman, who we’ll (presumably) see again in “The Flash,” Safran and Gunn don’t seem to want to advance a return beyond said cameo, but they are very interested in Affleck continuing at DC as a director. As for Ezra Miller, Gunn doesn’t get wet when it comes to talking about his future in the studio, but he assures it “He’s fully committed to his recovery” and both he and Safran argue “the journey you are on”. Who seems to have a safer future in DC is Momoa, but not like Lobo. Safran dropped it “Jason always saw Aquaman as a trilogy”and while they don’t confirm that third part after “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” Gunn assures it “They won’t have any actor playing two different roles”.
Finally, The DC Universe will have another version of Batman in ‘The Brave and the Bold’, a new film centered around Batman and Robin that will be totally separate from Robert Pattinson’s Batman, which will continue at DC, but in its own independent saga of interconnected films and series, overseen by Matt Reeves, director of “The Batman”. I mean, don’t expect Battinson to cross paths with DC Universe heroes Gunn and Safran, who will have their own Dark Knight.
