Radical is the film that kicked off the Sundance Film Festival. This was the opening film of the festival and it was such a wonderful way to start my Sundance experience this year.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I sat down to watch this movie. I tend to avoid all the details with the Sundance opening night movie because it’s usually a pleasant surprise and it’s exactly that Radical ended up being!

This is a heartwarming, heartfelt and uplifting film that tells the true story of a sixth-grade teacher in Matamoros, who arrives at an elementary school to test a radically new way of teaching children. Her plan is completely unconventional to let the children lead the lessons in the classroom and learn from the things they are interested in or have questions about and treat the children as if they were real human beings. It’s the exact opposite of how things have been taught in school for years… and it works!

The story unfolded in such a beautiful way and is definitely a tearjerker. There are several moments in the film that affect your emotions and you cannot hold back your tears.

The film is the protagonist Eugene Derbes (Tail) as Jose Urbina Lopez, and the synopsis reads: “Who will become the sixth graders of Matamoros elementary school? They are among the worst performing students in Mexico, the world they know is one of violence and hardship, and their classrooms are dominated by an atmosphere of overbearing discipline, not possibility. It might seem like a dead end… but it’s also the perfect place for new teacher Sergio Juarez to try something different. There’s just one problem: Sergio (played by a fantastic Eugenio Derbez) has no idea what he’s doing.

The characters that have been introduced in the story are based on real individuals and you can’t help but fall in love with the protagonists of the story. The performances were also great. The film is directed by Eugenio Derbez of the Overboard remake and he gave a powerful performance.

The film was directed by Christopher Zalla, and the film is described as an “honest, playful, powerfully thought-provoking story about a teacher who takes a radical approach with neglected and apathetic children to pique their curiosity and discover the joy of learning. to let children – who live in a world where they can’t be children – become children again.Based on true events, Radical sheds light on the incredible potential that children can manifest when an innovative teacher empowers them to think for themselves.

The story isn’t all sunshine and roses, but I walked out of the film with a heart full of joy and a big smile on my face.
