Last September, the crime comedy Confess, Fletch was quietly released by Paramount, giving us a whole new story Los Angeles Times reporter Irwin M. “Fletch” Fletcher. The character made his film debut in the 1985 comedy Fletch with Chevy Chaseand this was followed by Fletch lives. This new film starred Jon Hamm in the title role, and was directed by Greg Mottola (Very bad, Adventureland), who co-adapted the screenplay, based on the novels by Gregory McDonald. The film didn’t make much money, but those who saw it praised it highly. It’s been a passionate project for both Hamm and Mottola, and they’re hoping for another one to come to fruition, so much so that the writer-director has begun his next screenplay.

In a recent Instagram post by Mottola, the director shared a photo from the novel Fletch’s Luck above a notebook with his writings. She captioned it, “It may never get done, but I’ll do my best.”

Fletch’s Luck is the third book in the McDonald’s series and sees the titular investigative reporter give an ultimatum. The FBI is on him for tax evasion, and he has the choice of leaving the Riviera to attend a news conference and work as their spy or serve a serious prison sentence in the United States for his ill-gotten gains. Fletch chooses the former and, with a suitcase full of bugs, sets off in search of a scoop on an important and scandalous newspaper magnate. When said tycoon ends up dead, however, Fletch instead uses his time to investigate, a task made all the more difficult by the fact that the vast majority of conference attendees had a motive and connection to the tycoon.

It’s pretty much a done deal that if this movie gets made, Hamm will return to the starring role. In the first film, Hamm was accompanied by Roy Wood Jr., Lorenza Izzo, Kyle MacLachlan, Annie Mumolo, John Behlmann, John Slattery, Lucia Fist, Marcia Gay Harden, And Ayden Mayeri. I hope this amazing cast also gets a chance to return.

Confess, Fletch is available now via VOD or on Paramount+, Showtime and other platforms. See Mottola’s post on the potential sequel, Fletch’s Luck, below. Would you like to see it done?
