You always hurt the ones you love, sang the Mills Brothers. Tells Gerard Butler, still feeling guilty about an incident involving costar Hilary Swank on the set of her 2007 rom-com, PS I love you.
During a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore ShowThe 53-year-old actor opened up about how he “almost killed” Swank on the film’s set.
It seems that Butler’s character was meant to dance shirtless, wearing only a pair of suspenders.
“I literally spent a day and a half shooting that scene and I had to dance like an idiot in suspenders,” recalls Butler. “At one point the clip, which was a crocodile clip, got stuck on the TV as I crawled over to her and she’s right in front of me laughing hysterically.”
The clip was “so dangerous” that the camera crew came up with plastic cases to protect it.
“I had to ping it and it went past my face. And this time I crawl into bed. It sticks,” he said.
Swank was taken to the hospital.
“Imagine a studio and in three seconds everybody’s gone and I’m just sitting there in my boxers and my boots and some socks and I’m about to cry,” he said. “‘I just signed Hilary Swank!’ I almost took her eye out and I’ve been fooling myself for two days and that’s what I have to show for it. She went to the hospital.
Swank forgave him.
