On a recent episode of Corridor Crew’s Animators React, the gang called up animator Tom Bancroft to talk about some of the movies he’s worked on over the years, including The Lion King, MulanAnd Veggie Tales.
During the show, he was asked about Disney’s tendency to place Easter eggs in the background of shots that would otherwise be less visually interesting. It is at this point that he says that all the “dirty” Easter eggs people talk about are “fake”. He said:
“Sometimes we add a few things. They’re all innocent. The ones everyone clings to are the ones where they’re ‘dirty,’ right? Most of them are false, and we can talk about that another time and dig deep into that.”
I definitely remember some of these, and I’m sure you do too! I remember watching VHS tapes with friends reviewing and pausing scenes. Some of the most famous Easter eggs that have spread have been involved The Lion King with the word “Sex” written in powder; the priest gets an erection inside The little Mermaidand Aladdin whispering to “take off your clothes”. Aladdin. These are things that I remember as facts, and you can look them up online and remember that, yes…they are there.
Maybe some of them are unfortunate coincidences, but I don’t know. I wish he had gone into more detail explaining those things! Hopefully, in another episode, the Corridor Crew team will! In the meantime, watch this!
