Attack the block writer and director Joe Cornish is hard at work developing the much-anticipated sequel to the sci-fi action-adventure film. That first movie was so fun, and it’s crazy that we had to wait so long for a sequel, but it’s coming, it’s going to get done eventually.
The original film followed a gang of teenagers in South London who set out on a mission to defend their block from the monstrously terrifying aliens that had invaded the area. While a guest on The Kingcast podcast, Cornish chatted about the original film and offered an update on the sequel. He said:
“The nice thing about the first movie was that nobody expected it. Nobody knew who John was [Boyega] it was or who I was, certainly, outside of UK comedy circles. And we worked hard on the first one! Of course, I can make things up about aliens quite easily, but the other things – the aspects of reality that we’ve put the fantasy into – we’ve done a lot of research, and so we’re currently doing the same thing. We’ve got a very detailed treatment and storyline that we’re very, very excited about – and when I say “we”, I mean John Boyega and I, who [I’m co-producing the film with] and we’ve consulted closely with – and we’re doing all the research to make sure we get it right.”
He went on to talk about what kind of research he is doing and also shared what he wants Attack block 2 reach the same highs as James Cameronis the sequel to Terminator 2 And aliens. He said:
“This same afternoon I spent two hours interviewing someone whose life intersects with an element of the story, and when we’re done here I’m going to go home and transcribe it. So, we’re doing our due diligence in constructing the script and taking the same care that we had with the first one, but we’re very, very confident and excited about what we have. We think about ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’ and ‘Terminator’ and ‘Terminator 2,’ and we want to try and make our own version of what people did for those movies”.
Sounds exciting! It will be really cool to see what they cooked up and see how the story continues to unfold. Talking earlier about the development of the sequel, John Boyega She said:
“We are quite close. We’re getting there. Of course, we don’t want to release dates to anyone because we want to take care of the creative process. We have the main backbone of the story, but we’re still in the lab, just making sure the story is right. History is everything. But it won’t take long. I gave them drums to speed up the process. Hopefully, we’ll have an announcement soon for when we’re out and about in London, messing about.”
When asked if he had a say in the development and story as a producer on the film, Boyega explained how he enjoyed the collaborative process.
“Yes. This process has been great. The story was actually pitched by me and Joe Cornish. We collaborated a lot on crafting a story that makes sense to Moses and the other characters going into the second [film]and also the new characters that will appear in the sequel. And then, also, there are different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his point of view and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first film. We’re just trying to make sure we explore all of that, and bring a whole different vibe to that crazy first movie we made.
