EXCLUSIVE: Aloke Devichand, Netflix’s head of Asian original documentaries, who commissioned documentaries about Blackpink and Naomi Osaka in addition to an Oscar-nominated short, has left the streamer after nearly five years.
Devichand joined Netflix in 2018 in the newly created role of creating a series of Asia-Pacific focused docs that Netflix has prioritized lately. It won’t be replaced anytime soon, but Netflix will continue to prioritize unscripted APAC content through country content teams.
Former CNN and Al Jazeera CEO Devichand oversaw a number of people like Blackpink: Lightens the sky and Naomi Osaka about the Japanese tennis icon. More recently he has been working on Hope Frozen: A Quest for Twice Life and Oscar-nominated short film the elephant whisperer. The former won Thailand’s first ever International Emmy for Best Documentary and the latter tells the heartwarming story of an indigenous couple who are given an orphaned elephant to care for.
Devichand returned to the UK to be closer to his family and to freelance, including with Louis Theroux’s Mindhouse Productions and Netflix’s. My daughter’s killer independent Rogan productions.
He is producing for Netflix an upcoming documentary about the Euro 2020 final for the latter company.
Deadline revealed the still-untitled show last week, which will set a dramatic day when hosts England lost to Italy on penalties and chaos ensued as thousands of ticketless fans tried to storm Wembley Stadium.
