I had the chance to see the film Alice, darling ahead of its theatrical release last Friday, and was blown away by the film’s story, acting, and very realistic relationships between its characters. The film is the protagonist Anna Kendrick as Alice, an established woman in her career, in a relationship and celebrating the year she and her childhood best friends turn 30.
There are hints early in the film that something is wrong in her life, when dinner with her friends is soured by her urge to promptly tend to her phone, send pictures of herself in the restaurant bathroom, and return home in a mannered way. timely. . We see Alice try to tell her boyfriend Simon (CharlieCarrick) that she has to go out of town for work, covering her real-girl trip for her friend’s 30th birthday. Alice suffers in silence, pulling out strands of her hair, exercising obsessively and eating disorderly. Everything she hides about her builds the walls between her and her best friends, Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophia (Wunmi Mosaku), taller and thicker. You can see how far she has retreated and you can feel her approaching them as the film progresses, as anxious and mentally shrunken as she has become.
The small cast told an important and powerful story about mental and emotional abuse and what to look out for, for ourselves and for the people we care about. I loved the friendships in the movie. They felt so authentic and were such a beacon for Alice’s character to come back to in the darkness she was almost lost in. While I love a good revenge story, this movie didn’t go to extremes. It just played out in a way that gives hope to people in abusive situations, and I hope it’s widely seen to help someone who may be suffering.
Anna Kendrick was incredible in her performance and laid out her feelings and heartbreak on the table. I hope she gets a nomination for her role and I hope you get a chance to check out the movie.
