There is no doubt that, to make good art, one must stand on the shoulders of giants. And that was very internalized by Jordan Peele when he was planning the plans for his horror and sci-fi films. And it is that, confirmed what many theories claim, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” inspired its crazy plot that also has to do with giant creatures.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Comic Book), Josh Horowitz chatted with Jordan Peele about his latest work. The director confessed that ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ inspired ‘no’, one of the best horror and sci-fi films of recent years. Which is to be expected, since the acclaimed director has kept many references to anime in his work.

The director explains itevangelization’ denim jacket inspired designthe UFO that at the end of the tape becomes an angel similar to those of the anime: “I didn’t want to be a bit literal saying that Jean Jacket or this kind of ocular Nimbus is an angel, but I think there is something in the place where evolution and design collide which leaves open doors that may or may not be fixed in the future.”

Since the tape’s premiere in 2022, many fans have been theorizing the relationship between ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ Y ‘no’. In the film’s production notes, they directly mentioned the Angels’ “biomechanical design style” from the anime. Of course, once you see Jean Jacket in the cinema, it’s hard to deny that there is a certain reminiscence of what Hideaki Anno envisioned in 1995.

For those who haven’t seen the anime, in ‘Evangelion’ the Angels are creatures from another world created by the First Ancestral Race, i.e. they come from Adam, and clearly take references from the Judeo-Christian religion. These beings come to Earth seeking the completion of their development, which would cause an explosion so devastating that it would end all life on the planet.

To face them, humanity has created the Evas, robots manned as children to face the Angels, each one different and more prepared than the previous one. They are precisely the fifth and sixteenth angels, who bear a peculiar resemblance to Jean Jacket, who also changes shape, and who does not seem to have a clear goal for humanity.

‘Evangelion’ has not only influenced Jordan Peele with his ‘Nope’, as a multitude of works and products of popular culture have partly absorbed what Hideaki Anno envisioned. It is enough to see Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ to understand that part of the wicks of him and Kaijus owe something to this glorious anime which is about to turn 28 years old.
