Channing Tatum he was very vocal about how much he hated being part of 2009 GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he tried to stay out of the film and aired it seven times before being forced to due to contractual obligations.
Tatum took a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, and when asked about that film he said:
“The first one I turned down seven times, but they had an option on me and I had to do the film. So the second, of course, I didn’t want to do that either.
The actor went on to confirm he pushed to be killed in the first 10 minutes of the 2013 sequel GI Joe: Retaliation, so that it would no longer have to be part of the franchise. When asked if he regretted that decision, he said bluntly, “No.” I don’t blame him! Those GI Joe movies suck! It’s a shame that the executives and filmmakers at Paramount Studios didn’t know how to handle that franchise properly.
Tatum previously told Howard Stern how much he hated those movies and why he didn’t want to make them:
“Look, I’ll be honest. I fucking hate that movie. I hate that movie. I was driven to make that film. Since ‘Coach Carter,’ they got me a three-picture deal… They give you the deal and they’re like, ‘A three-picture deal, that’s it.’ And as a young man [actor], you’re like, ‘Oh my god, this looks great, I’m doing it!’ Time passes and you get other jobs and you are building your budget and you have a dream job you want to take. And … the studio calls and they’re like, ‘Hey, we’ve got a movie for you, we’ll send it to you.’ And they send it to you, and it’s GI Joe.
“And I love GI Joe: ‘Can I play Snake Eyes?’ And they’re like, ‘No, you’re not playing Snake Eyes, you’re playing GI Joe.’ The script didn’t fit… And I didn’t want to do something that… I was a fan of since I was a kid and watched every morning growing up – and I didn’t want to do something that was, one, ugly and, two, I just didn’t know if I wanted to be G.I. Joe.
I wasn’t a fan of Channing Tatum for being a part of it GI Joe movie, but now that I know he wasn’t happy with it and tried to get out of it because he knew it would suck, I won’t hold it against him again.
