Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg he is best known for his epic films like ETthe Indiana Jones movie, Jaws, Schindler’s List, Save Private Ryan, and many others, but has yet to delve into the world of TV as a director. He has been involved in some big series, but only in the role of producer. He hopes that will change soon, and he even has some kind of series that he’s trying to do.

In a recent interview with the Smartless podcast (via The Playlist), Spielberg opened up about his future plans and what kind of series he thinks he can really delve into:
“I have an appetite for the long form and will one day direct a long form series. I mean, if someone had brought “Mare of Easttown” to me, I would have. [Laughs] It was a wonderfully directed story.
That was a great limited series, and I could see him totally attached to a big character-driven story like that. He revealed he approached directing an HBO series when he flirted with the idea of making his own Oscar-winning film Lincoln in a six-hour miniseries instead of a feature film.
“I was willing to do ‘Lincoln’ for six hours [show] because I could not raise all the funding for it. No one believed it… I went around the city and everyone rejected me. I was ready to make a deal with HBO to do it and expand it to six hours. Tony Kushner’s first draft was 550 pages, so I had the goods! I had the material. I don’t know if I could have gotten Daniel Day-Lewis to do six hours, but I was on the verge of that.
I love watching everything Spielberg does, so I can’t wait for him to hook up with the right story and get it out on our televisions. We will keep you updated as we know more.
