COVERFIELD Director Matt Reeves Explains Monster Backstory About Child Experiencing Separation Anxiety

Clover field director Matt Reeves he recently sat down for an interview with Syfy Wire to talk about his monster-found-in-footage movie to celebrate its 15th anniversary. During the interview, he shared some new information about the monster’s backstory and why it went on a rampage in New York City.

When Reeves was asked if they came up with a backstory for the monster, he said, “We definitely did because you have to figure out how to direct the monster, so to speak. So you have to figure out what’s going on with them emotionally.”

The director then reveals a fascinating aspect of the gigantic creature that makes me look at the film in a whole new light. The monster is a child who is experiencing separation anxiety. Reeves explains:

“And for me, the big secret was that the monster was a baby and he was experiencing separation anxiety. The reason the monster was freaking out is because they were having fits based on finding their mother. And so , [the monster] he was just as scared as the main characters, because it seems like there would be nothing more terrifying than the human element fighting this giant monster element, and really, both of them are just terrified. It’s a mess. This is not good. So that part was absolutely something that we talked about in the development of the creature and in terms of how I shot it.”

That gives the audience such a different perspective and I found it so interesting. The director continued to talk about the origin of the monster, saying:

“It’s alien. In fact, at the end of the film, you can see the moment where it is [Earth]. It’s another one of those little Easter egg moments, but when we replay that cutscene where I’m on the Ferris wheel at the end, you can see the meteor fly down and hit the ocean. This is actually the beginning of the birth of the child on Earth.”

The ending of the film sees a video of Rob (Michael Stahl-David) and Bet (Odette Yustmann) enjoy more joyful moments while riding a Ferris wheel. In that video we see a meteor crashing into the sea. Did you notice it the first time you saw it!?

There have been two other films in the Clover field franchise included 10 Cloverfield Ave And The Cloverfield Paradox. There is also a fourth film in development which will be directed by Babak Anvariwith JJ Abrams return to produce.
