Dennis Quaid (Internal space, The day after tomorrow) has joined the cast of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series Bass Reeves, which is another Yellowstone spin-off series set before the events of 1883.

Quaid joins David Eyelowo, who plays the title character, a legendary lawman from the Wild West. Quaid will play Sherrill Lynn, a deputy U.S. marshal. He is the first cast member aside from Oyelowo to be officially confirmed for the series.

The official description reads: “Reeves was known as the greatest frontier hero in American history and was also believed to have inspired ‘The Lone Ranger.’ He worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in Indian Territory, apprehending over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being injured.

Eyelowo previously spoke of the series explaining that “traces the life of Reeves since he was born into slavery. After the Civil War he escaped his captivity, as Oyelowo explained, to live in the Indian territories where he learned languages and tracking skills which he used when he was commissioned as a deputy marshal to police the territories, which were incredibly illegal.

He added: “The death rate of being a deputy marshal back then was so high that the fact that he had 3,000 arrests – and a career that extended into his 60s – were simply unthinkable. For me, it’s definitely a big deal. Especially since I’ve come out with it twice and the whole industry has said no to the idea of the story being told.

Taylor Sheridan executive produces alongside Chad Feehan, David C. Glasser, Oyelowo, Jessica Oyelowo, David Permut, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and David Hutkin.
