ETERNALS star Barry Keoghan explains why he thinks Marvel fans didn’t like the film

When Marvel came out Eternals was met with a lot of mixed reactions from fans. I felt like most fans didn’t care. The film definitely had a different tone and feel to it, and that was due to the studio bringing in an indie filmmaker Chloe Zhao to direct the film.

There were certain elements of the film that I enjoyed, but overall, for me, the story, the script and the way some of the characters were developed didn’t stand out to me. The movie definitely opened the door for a whole new epic Marvel mythology in the MCU, one that I was excited about! But this movie didn’t quite capture the grand scale Jack Kirbyit streamed the comics, which is what I expected.

During a recent interview, Barry Keoghanwho played Druig in the film, shared his thoughts on why he thinks fans disliked the film:

“I think Chloe brought a very special vibe. You know? So Chloe brings — as you’ve seen from her previous films — raw performances and really, really touching performances. I don’t think it was… I think it was new. I think that it was just new. It was new to Marvel.”

Yes, it was new, and I completely understand capturing raw and touching performances, but when character development and story are weak, those things couldn’t really shine. I know some people liked the movie, though! For me, I think it would have been so much better if they went full on Jack Kirby.

The story spans thousands of years and follows a group of immortal heroes from beyond the stars who have protected the Earth from the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to unite to once again defend humanity.

The cast of Eternals also includes Angelina Jolie like Thena, Richard Maden like Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani like Kingo, Lauren Ridloff like Makkari, Brian Tiree Henry like Festus, Salma Hayek like Aiak, Lia McHugh like Goblin, Don Lee like Gilgamesh, Gem Chan such as Sersi, e Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight.
