HBO Max cancels ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot after two seasons

The decision was sudden and the last episode of the second season, which opens on January 26 in the United States (and the day after in Spain, as usual), it officially becomes the finale of the series, which concludes with 22 chapters in total. Taking into account that the announcement takes place only a few days after its airing, everything indicates that the series will not have a real closure and will remain unfinished.

“We are very grateful to showrunner/executive producer Joshua Safran and executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for taking us back to the Upper East Side and all the Constance Billard scandals”says HBO Max in a statement (via Deadline). “While we’re not moving forward with a third season of ‘Gossip Girl,’ we thank you for the evocative love triangles, calculated backstabbing, and flawless fashion this series has brought to new audiences.”.

Developed by Joshua Safran, who worked as writer and producer on the original series, the new ‘Gossip Girl’ introduced us to a new generation of rich kids in a reimagining of the property for Gen Z. The series premiered to mixed reviews but to a ratings hit in July 2021, setting the record for the best opening for an HBO Max original series to that date. However, it failed to stay in the spotlight during its second season despite having better reviews.

Safran confirmed the news in a Message to their fans on their social networks: “Here’s the gossip: It’s with all the sadness in the world that I have to announce that ‘Gossip Girl’ will not be continuing on HBO Max. Thanks for watching the series and I hope you don’t miss the finale next Thursday to see how it all fits together xoxo”. The thread continues with its thanks to everyone involved in the project: “The producers and I will be forever grateful to the network and studio for their faith and support, to the writers for their twisted minds and brilliant talents, to the superstar cast for being best collaborators and friends, and to the crew for their hard work. hard work, dedication and love for the project. Honestly, this is the best set I’ve ever worked on, from start to finish”.

Will this be the final end of the franchise?

In your message, Safran assures that they are looking for a possible new home for the series, although he acknowledges that it will be very difficult to find.: “In this climate, it could be an uphill battle, so if this is the end of it, at least we’re trying hard.”.

Despite everything, the showrunner remains optimistic and concludes his statement suggesting that this may not be the end of “Gossip Girl” as a property, or at least that’s her wish: “Thank you so much to all GG fans around the world. You are the reason we are back, and who knows, maybe you are the reason we will meet again. Lots of love”.

Both the original series of “Gossip Girl”, consisting of a total of six seasons, and the reboot, both based on the books by Cecily von Ziegesar, are available on HBOMax.
