EXCLUSIVE: Screen Media has acquired the North American rights to the crime thriller Devil’s spikewith Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton (The gray man), Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (Wonder Woman 1984), Hopper Penn (War Machine) and Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Guardian).
Recorded by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Company, the film hits theaters exclusively on February 17th, with a digital release on February 24th.
The film directed by Ben Young (dogs of love) based on the novel Where all the light tends to go by DavidJoy. Set in the Appalachian Mountains, it follows a family dominated by a crime boss (Thornton) who uses his fists to control them and his company. When his son (Penn) meets the girl of his dreams (Katelyn Nacon), who is desperate to escape the life he is supposed to live and free himself from his father’s clutches, he is forced to confront the terrible man to confront, who will stop at nothing to secure the loyalty of everyone around him.
Robert Knot (Appaloosa) adapted the script and produced with Wright, Griff Furst, Josh Kesselman and Jamie Hilton. Executive producers include Ford Corbett, Seth Needle, Conor McAdam, Maurice Fadida, Angela Meredith Furst, Landon Gorman, Amanda Morrison, Brandon Powers, Anthony Standberry and David Nagelberg.
Young told Deadline that “it’s always been a dream of mine to work with a cast of this size. I wanted to go back to my roots and make a film on location that lives or dies by its execution. [Devil’s Peak is] Filmmaking at its purest, fueled by the love and passion for the medium from everyone involved.”
“We’ve been huge fans of the story since we first read it,” added David Fannon, Chicken Soup for Soul Entertainment’s chief acquisitions and distribution officer. “Devil’s spike is the kind of original storytelling that Screen Media can’t wait to bring to a global audience.”
Other recent Screen Media acquisitions include the directorial debut of Tom DeLonge Specimens from Californiathe actor by Renny Harlin the mason with Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev of Millennium Films, locksmith with Ryan Phillippe, Kate Bosworth and Ving Rhames, and the Bella Thorne-led thriller Saint Clare with Philippe and Rebecca DeMornay.
The agreement for Devil’s spike was negotiated by Seth Needle, Executive Vice President of Global Acquisitions and Co-Productions, on behalf of Screen Media with Griff Furst on behalf of the filmmakers.
