James Cameron and his creative team spent years developing the stories and scripts for the Avatars sequel and the first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, knocked out of the park! It was a great movie that features some beautiful visuals and great ocean battle sequences. Well, it turns out that one of the first drafts of this film’s script involved an epic Na’vi battle in space!

Screenwriters Rick Jaffa And Amanda Silver are two of the screenwriters hired by Cameron to work on the films Josh Friedmann And Shane Salernoand in a recent interview with EW, they shared some of the different directions they explored and one of those things involved that space battle!
Jaffa talked about it and explained why it didn’t ultimately happen: “There was an idea of a space battle with Navi. That idea was very successful and we talked about it a lot. However, we were struggling. How would this work with the story we’re telling? Jim said, ‘Well, give me a few weeks.’ He went off and wrote a whole script. And, by the way, a brilliant script.”
That script actually did well in the writer’s room, but ended up being thrown away. Jaffe explained, “Eventually, the whole script got thrown out because it just didn’t really work with the story we were telling.”
It would have been great to see a space battle in this franchise. There is still time, though! Perhaps a space battle will make its way into one of the upcoming sequels. But, for now, that material has been incorporated into the comic Avatar: the heightswhich was written by Sherri L. Smith. Three volumes have been released, and it includes the story of that scrapped script.
They played with a lot of different ideas in the writer’s room for these Avatars sequels and the writers “often take such an idea and seriously explore it for a couple of days to see if it would be viable for the story.” Jaffe added, “Some of them would just be minor things, an could be anything from a plot point to a character to a character beat.”
Silver shared, “The idea was six months in the writers’ room, and that we would break down three films line by line, which would describe a larger saga, but each film would be distinct. We didn’t know which film we were going to write, we would be been involved in all of them and every line of every movie, then Christmas would come [of 2013]Jim would tell us what movie we had and send us to write it, and work with us on writing each of the scripts.”
Cameron is a madman, which is why he’s able to make the things he does with his movies! He’s just manipulating so many things when he develops them Avatars movie. Silver went on to describe what the real writer’s room was like, saying, “I couldn’t even figure out how many whiteboards, and then whiteboards that flip over and you can write on the back. Eventually, you’d walk into the room and it was a bit It’s a maze to find your way.”
Talking about the amount of material they were working on, Silver said, “Just tons and tons of material. The challenge was how do you fit all of that in and have it resonate emotionally by the end of the film and not be rushed? That’s how our film , the first, has become two”.
When Cameron’s “The Ash People” was mentioned in the conversation, nobody wanted to go there and talk about it. The Ash Peolle are a new tribe of Na’vi representing fire that will be introduced Avatars 3 and of this Silver said: “I should be afraid to speak of the people of the ashes.” But, Jaffe joked, “None of us hesitated at all when [Cameron] presented the idea. We are all freaked out. We were all like, ‘Oh my god! Is fantastic.'”
Silver went on to add, “There are huge surprises and world expansions coming to 3 that make it feel very different.”
It must have been an amazing and incredible experience to be part of the development of this film and to work with Cameron. Now, I hope a Na’vi space battle becomes one of the next sequels!
