Almost a year after his mental health was questioned, former porn star Ron Jeremy has been officially declared incompetent to stand trial on multiple rape charges.
Judge Ronald S. Harris said during a hearing today at a Hollywood Boulevard courthouse that the alleged serial killer, now in his 70s, is in “terminal neurocognitive decline.” Referring to the absent defendant, whose real name is Ronald Jeremy Hyatt, the Los Angeles Superior Court judge went on to say that the assessments he conducted indicate that Jeremy’s mental state is “very likely irreversible.”
If Jeremy had been tried and convicted, he could have faced more than 300 years in prison.
Jeremy’s future is currently being held at DTLA’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility and will be decided at a hearing on February 7. According to a report by LA County Assistant Attorney Paul Thompson, Judge Harris was not able to rule on whether or not Jeremy should be placed in a state mental health facility, but rather how limited he will be in the mental health facility he enters going forward. The question is also how long Jeremy’s closure can last and whether he poses a danger to himself and others.
Jeremy was arrested in June 2020 and most recently charged with 33 counts of rape and assault by LA District Attorney George Gascón’s office. Jeremy is said to have an acute case of dementia, law enforcement sources confirm to Deadline. Earlier this month the LA times reported on the prognosis and subsequent incompetence presented to prosecutors and lawyers after a series of medical examinations.
Last March, just six weeks before the trial began, LASC Judge George Lomeli stayed Jeremy’s case for a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant.
“When he was arrested two years ago, I said he would be found not guilty on all charges,” Jeremy’s lawyer, Stuart Goldfarb, said in a statement on Tuesday. Meeting. “Two years have passed and with the additional discovery I’ve gotten, I thought he would be found not guilty,” Encino’s attorney added. “Due to his mental state, it is unfortunate that he will not appear in court and have an opportunity to clear his name.”
The LA DA’s office did not respond to a request for comment meeting about Jeremy or his condition.
Charged with assaulting 21 people between the ages of 15 and 51 in attacks dating back to the early 1990s, Jeremy pleaded not guilty when first brought up by the LAPD. He made the same plea again in August 2021 after a new grand jury indictment was filed.
Now he probably doesn’t even know it happened.
