‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’: Kevin Feige Explains Why MCU Phase 5 Starts With It

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters on February 17. film which, simultaneously with the closing of a trilogy, opens the doors to Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A great privilege and responsibility for Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), characters who made their UCM debut 8 years ago in ‘Ant-Man’.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, explained why Ant-Man was chosen to usher in the new phase of the MCU: “We wanted to start Phase 5 with Ant-Man because he earned that spot. To not simply be the comic backup or resource, but to take his place at the head of the MCU.” This frontline prominence Feige mentions is something comic readers have still missed in the film adaptations, since Ant-Man is one of the original and founding members of The Avengers in the cartoons. Except for a few key revelations about quantum travel, the path taken by Paul Rudd’s character in the MCU hasn’t had much of an impact on the franchise’s midsection, which seems to be changing with the release of ‘Quantumania’.

Feige and company are so clear that Ant-Man has earned the opportunity to open Phase 5 that, moreover, he will do so by facing Kang The Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), a villain of such magnitude that he will be the main antagonist of the Avengers in the next film that brings together these characters: “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”. That is, the events Ant-Man is involved in are critical to the future of the MCU.

In the same interview with Empire Magazine, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ director Peyton Reed compared the difficulty Scott Lang faces in this film with the other two chapters of the trilogy: “We’re no longer running the streets of San Francisco. We’re battling one of the most powerful villains in Marvel history. And perhaps these are the least expected Avengers to be the first to face him.” For his part, the screenwriter of ‘Ant-Man 3’, Jeff Loveness, reiterates Reed’s words on the large size of the villain referring to him as a challenge worthy of a story in which all the Avengers meet: “The first conversation we had was, ‘What if Ant-Man is accidentally alone in an Avengers movie?'”
