Tom Cruise saved Todd Field’s “In The Bedroom” from Harvey Weinstein

Todd Field remembers the moment he found out Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax had acquired his debut film In the bedroom at the Sundance Film Festival and how Tom Cruise’s advice saved him.

Weinstein was known for reshaping filmmakers’ visions, and Field worried that if his film was bought, he would not have a say in the editing process. In an interview with The New Yorker, Field talked about calling the Impossible mission star who gave him good advice.

“I was crying in the bathroom,” Field recalled. “I called Tom Cruise and said, ‘Something terrible has happened.’ He basically said, “This is how you’re going to play it. It’s going to take six months and you’re going to beat him, but you have to do step by step exactly what I’m going to tell you.” Step.'”

Cruise advised Field not to pressure Weinstein and let him handle the editing. He suggested that Field wait until it does poorly with audiences and then remind them how well the film did at the film festival so they would release the original version. Cruise’s advice finally worked and In the bedroom earned more than twenty-five times its budget and was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture.”

Field’s latest film tar is another award-winning work, and star Cate Blanchett recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Field was nominated for best screenplay, but the trophy went to Martin McDonagh The Banshees by Inisherin.
