During the American Cinematheque celebration at the Writers Guild of America Theater in Beverly Hills, the composer said, “I’m going to stay here a while. I can’t retire from music. A day without music is a mistake.”

The celebration focused on Williams and the director Steven Spielberg50 years of collaboration. Their relationship started way back in 1974 with the movie The Sugarland Expressand have been working together ever since.

They recently collaborated on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which Spielberg is producing. Before that Williams had thought about his possible retirement, but when Spielberg told him about Indiana Jones 5, Williams said, “Steven is a lot of things. He’s a director, he’s a producer, he’s a studio head, he’s a writer, he’s a philanthropist, he’s an educator, one thing he’s not is a man you can say no to.

He then added: “So I have another 10 years ahead of me. I will stop for a while! Also, you can’t “retire” from music. It’s like breathing. It’s your life. It’s my life. A day without music is a mistake.”

Spielberg seemed shocked by what Williams said and replied, “I better get to work finding out what the hell I’m going to do next!”

Williams loves what he does, and it’s hard to walk away from something you love to do so much. Even though he has earned his retirement, I love that he will continue to do so and continue to create more music.
