EXCLUSIVE: 1091 images acquired North American rights Mixtape Trilogy: Tales of the Power of Music – a star-studded musical documentary written and directed by Kathleen Ermitage in her feature film debut. The film, featuring folk-rock icons Indigo Girls, composer-pianist Vijay Iver and rapper-activist Talib Kewli, will be released on digital platforms on February 7.
Mixtape trilogy explores one of the most intense and unique relationships between people who rarely meet: music artists and their fans. In the documentary, Indigo Girls openly share their journey that greatly impacted the life of their biggest fan. Iyer explores issues of immigration and race in his music and sees his work touch the heart of Garnette, a “man of the street” from Kingston, Jamaica. And then there’s Kweli, who inspires and changes the life of Mike, a “hip-hop” architect from Detroit. Ermitage in Document unwinds the music from everyone and invites the audience to fall in. The art of listening unfolds, inspiring us to listen to music and perhaps to each other in new ways.
The award-winning film, which will debut at the Sonoma festival site in 2022, is produced by Alan Cogen, Dave Harding and John Scheinfeld (Chasing Tears: The Documentary by John Coltrane). Gregory Maurice negotiated the purchase agreement for 1091 Pictures.
