James Cameron Says AVATAR: WATERWAY Will Break Even, Paving Way For Future Sequels

Director James Cameron has an ambitious task ahead of him, to make the third, fourth and fifth film in the Avatar franchise, following its recently released sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. Coming out 14 years after the first Avatars movie, the future of the franchise rests on this sequel pulling off a box office record only to break even and make the next movies possible. Cameron said just a couple of months ago that sequels would only be made if this movie proved that people “still give a shit.”

Cameron told GQ Magazine in November that the sequel would have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history just to “break even.” Those photos grossed over $2 billion worldwide. Now Cameron sat with Who is talking to Chris Wallace to talk about future numbers and factors, saying:

“I never actually gave him a number. I said it should have been among the highest grossing films in history and someone else applied that number and it was picked up. The number is actually less.

Avatar: The Way of Water it stands at $1.54 billion worldwide, having just passed Top Gun: nonconformist as the highest-grossing release of 2022. It is also the ninth highest-grossing film ever and the second highest-grossing film of the pandemic after Spider-Man: There’s no way back home ($1.9 billion).

Cameron continued:

“It looks like with the momentum the movie has now, we’ll easily get through our hiatus in the next few days as well, so I can’t seem to get myself out of this one and I’m going to have to do these other sequels. I know what I’m going to do in the next six or seven years.”

Cameron also said of the sequel’s draw:

“The point is, we’ll be fine. I’m sure we’ll have discussions with Disney’s top guys soon about the game plan for the future Avatars 3, which is already in the jar: we’ve already captured and photographed the entire film, and then we’re in extensive post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatars 4 And 5 they are both written. We also have some 4 in the jar. We started a franchise at this point. We started a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

Avatars 3 is currently scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, Avatars 4 on December 18, 2026 and Avatars 5 on December 22, 2028. Are you looking forward to future films in the series?
