Although a release date in Latin America has not yet been confirmed, ‘The Whale’ was one of the most discussed and appreciated films in various festivals last year. Largely due to the incredible performance of Brendan Fraser, who is a serious Oscar contender, and who has now spoken about his costume in the film, which he refuses to label a “fat suit.”
In a recent interview for Deadline, Brendan Fraser talked about his costume ‘The whale’, which was made to resemble the appearance of a 700-pound man. The story features Charlie, an overweight teacher who teaches his lessons from his small apartment, as he tries to mend his relationship with his daughter, played by Sadie Sink, best known for ‘Stranger Things’ on Netflix.
The actor was asked about his performance in the film A24 and comments: “It was cumbersome, for good reason. Because putting an actor in a costume, a gadget, to emulate the character’s weight gain, in years past, has diminished the authenticity. It is usually the silhouette of a costume worn by a fairly athletic actor and is in the service of a cheap joke or to denigrate a character.”
The interviewer corrected Brendan Fraser saying: “They call it a fat suitor something like that,” words that provoke a reaction in Fraser, who replied “You will never hear me say this”. From the outset, the ‘The Mummy’ actor has taken care of his words so as not to fall into prejudice against overweight people, and criticizes several Hollywood productions that trivialize the subject.

Brendan Fraser: ‘Obesity is one of the accepted norms of intolerance’
In preparation for his role as Charlie, Fraser met with Florida’s Obesity Action Coalition, where he spoke about one of the topics that remains taboo: “Obesity is one of the last accepted norms of prejudice and intolerance that we have in our society. now. I think [la película] it could help change the course of that dialogue. It could change some hearts and minds,” he told Empire magazine.
“I’ve been away from Hollywood, from movies for a while, because it had some chips and dings in the paint, and the hinges needed fixing. And it took a… it took a lot longer than I was actually prepared for, but I had to do it, and it took a while,” Fraser said. But after a few small screen roles and the canceled ‘Batgirl’ , the actor says he’s in one of the best moments of his career.
‘The Whale’ still does not have a theatrical release date in Mexico and Latin America, and it is expected that some distributors will be encouraged to bring one of A24’s films to the territory which will certainly have nominations at the next Academy Awards , and at Brendan Fraser as one of the greatest modern actors.
