Steven Spielberg cast Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans after seeing her in Fosse/Verdon

Steven Spielberg was inspired by his own life The Fables and the film’s cast was personal.

Michelle Williams plays Mitzi Fabelman, a character inspired by Spielberg’s mother. The director said Williams deserved the role after seeing her in the FX series Foss/Verdon.

“She has a secret energy that came from her portrayal of Gwen Verdon,” the filmmaker shared The New York Times. “It helped make her my first choice for the role of Mitzi.”

Intrigued by the script, Williams said: “I couldn’t believe it when I started turning the pages of this script. My husband was in the room with me and I kept saying, “It just gets better.” When you have a script, a lot of times you have a great scene and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is going to be amazing.’ And it was just page after page of it, just this rippling, beautiful vibrancy. When I finished, I said to my husband, ‘It’s a party. They threw her a party.’”

Spielberg was a co-writer The Fables with Tony Kushner and Williams giving props for their work.

“It took me a long time to engage with the material because the words and ideas are classic Kushner, through the lens of Steven Spielberg,” Williams said. “It’s cinematic and theatrical, that’s what really interests me and has been my single-minded focus since returning to theatre. I prepare a lot for a film and there was so much to grasp. It felt more like doing a miniseries because the material was so rich.”
