Joey’s Top 20 Favorite Movies and TV Shows of 2022

The end of 2022 has arrived and it’s high time I share my list of favorite film and TV projects of the year! Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy to narrow it down to just 20 favourites. But after much discussion, handshaking, and maybe a few tears, I present to you my top 20 movies and TV shows of the year. These are the projects that took my breath away, stole my heart, kept me on the edge of my seat, and left a lasting impression on me. So, without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Top Gun: nonconformist

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick is one of the greatest movies ever made! You can find that quote of mine on the cover of every Blu-ray and 4K Ultra that’s out there. This movie completely blew me away! It was one of the greatest cinematic experiences I’ve ever had! Of course, it will be at the top of my list!

Everything everywhere all at once

Everything Everywhere All at Once was one of the big surprise hits of the year. I absolutely loved this movie and had ear to ear grins from start to finish. The movie was a crazy action packed movie which was visually stunning but what I liked the most was its heartfelt and emotional story.

Star Wars: Andor

This is easily one of the best Star Wars projects ever done. Andor was a very different kind of Star Wars project that was gritty and grounded and intelligent. He treated Star Wars fans with respect and provided a compelling, thrilling and unique story for a Star Wars project. I hope we see more Star Wars projects like this!

Elvis

As a longtime Elvis fan, this was one movie I was looking forward to. This film directed by Baz Luhrmann exceeded my expectations! This was an amazing movie and Austin Butler’s Elvis Presley performance blew my mind, he was so damn good! I experienced a lot of emotions watching this movie!

Werewolf at night

This is the only Marvel project that will make my list this year! Why? Because it was the best thing Marvel Studios released in 2022! Werewolf by Night got me excited about Marvel projects again! As a fan of older horror movies, I loved how this one paid homage to those. This made me happy and I hope Marvel does more experimental projects like this!

The black phone

Scott Derrick’s The Black Phone was an exciting and moving experience! I loved the story and the characters. But it was the extreme nail-biting intensity that I loved the most, and the way the film ended was so, so satisfying. I enjoyed the applause of the crowd during the climax of the film.

The Batman

Matt Reeve’s The Batman is going on my list! I loved his dark, grounded and gritty take on the Dark Knight. It was unlike any Batman movie I’ve ever seen before and Robert Pattinson was amazing in the role! It was arguably the best comic book movie released in theaters this year.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Collin Ferrell and Brendan Gleason are together again in another dark comedy from director Martin McDonagh. This is such a talented and creative team and this film provided such fun quirky dark entertainment, and it was so different and unique. Then, of course, there was the brilliant acting!

The Fabelmans

This film directed by Steven Spielberg really resonated with me. There were so many relatable aspects to the story and I connected with it in very strong and profound ways. This movie stuck with me days after I saw it. Shortly after the first time, I re-watched it so I could continue to absorb the story. The movie is based on Spielberg’s young life, and he did a great job telling that story!

The Norman

This dark Viking revenge thriller was visually stunning and told a wild, whimsical, ferocious and poetic story. I was completely engrossed in the story this movie tells and it has some unexpected twists that lead to a brutal sword fight on an erupting volcano!

Barbarian

This was such a big surprise! I had no idea what was in store for this movie. I didn’t know much about it, I had no expectations when I walked into the theater to watch it, and it ended up being such an incredibly fun aspect of my movie experience! The movie kept me guessing what was going to happen till the very end!

The clothing

This is a short-lived mass crime noir thriller, but it sure packs quite a punch! The story kept me in suspense and I loved how it turned out. I especially loved how the movie ended and Mark Rylance gave such a great performance!

Special Counsel Woo

This Korean series about an autistic lawyer making his way through life came out of nowhere! I stumbled upon it on Netflix, started watching it, and was instantly hooked. It was just such an incredibly charming feel-good series with an incredibly lovable character. I loved this series and if you haven’t seen it, you need to watch it!

The bear

When I started watching The Bear on Hulu, I had no idea what to expect, but once I started watching it, I couldn’t stop! I was completely captured and engulfed in the story and the characters were so wonderfully interesting. The writing on the show was also top notch. The Bear is one of the best shows of the year.

1883

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spin-off series 1883 is one of the best westerns made in a long time and gives us one of the most accurate portrayals of what it was like for pioneers to travel west across the plains. This was such a well written series and I enjoyed the great characters that were introduced.

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro

This was such a beautifully told story and the most unique adaptation of Pinocchio that has ever been made. I was very pleased with Guillermo del Toro’s vision for this story, and his visual style, coupled with the stop-motion animation, made this project something special. But it was the heart and soul of the story and the characters that made this film so great.

Wednesday

Tim Burton’s Netflix series was just plain fun, and Jenna Ortega as the titular character of Wednesday Addams gave such a wickedly charming performance! I’ve been a fan of the Addams Family franchise over the years and this latest installment simply amused the hell out of it!

The offer

As a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather movies, I was thrilled to watch a series that told the story of how the first film was made, and it turned out to be a great show! It made me want to see more shows that focus on the making of classic movies, especially movies that have fascinating and crazy behind-the-scenes stories.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This is my new favorite Star Trek series! I thought Picard would be my favorite Star Trek show and while it’s good, Strange New Worlds ended up being so much better! It reminded me a lot of the original Star Trek show with its tone and stories, but at the same time it offered a new take on the franchise that works.

Cha Cha True Smooth

This is a wonderful and uplifting coming of age story that made me feel incredibly happy when it was finished. This was the feel-good film of the year which was filled with many charming and heartfelt moments and did a great job capturing the ups and downs of life. I also loved the main character and it made you root for him throughout the movie.
