SPOILERS WARNING!
*This article contains major plot spoilers for Knives in the Back: Mystery of the Glass Onion.
Since last December 23rd, ‘Fist in the back: The mystery of the glass onion’ is now available on Netflix. Daniel Craig once again puts himself in the shoes of the chicest detective, Benoit Blanc, who this time is invited to the “murder mystery” party organized by tech mogul Miles Bron (Edward Norton). Now that the fastest have already discovered what mystery the layers of the “crystal onion” hide, Rian Johnson is ready to reveal all the secrets. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading as we will be dealing with plot spoilers.

The director and screenwriter returns to the forefront of film after having success with the first ‘Daggers in the back’ which already had more than one unexpected twist. In this case, one of the biggest surprises we discovered in the middle of the filmwhen a flashback shows us that Janelle Monáe’s character is not Cassandra Brand, co-founder of Miles Bron’s company, but her twin sister Helen, who wants to find out which of Cassandra’s “cachoshiters” who claimed to be friends are looking for her death.
The affair of the secret twin is not something new in mystery stories, but it is one of the more controversial plot points. Rian Johnson himself was rather reticent when they were writing the film: “I think the first question was, okay, how do we do this? And I guess the main thing was that it couldn’t be looked at from a different angle. It had to be a twist of perspective basic enough to introduce a new tension into the repetition of all the scenes, that’s what led to the idea of the twins. In the process, I was drawn into the idea of identical twins while kicking and screaming. I didn’t want to do it, it seemed like a terrible cliché, ‘will the public forgive me for this?’ But I think we got away with it because it’s not revealed at the end as ‘uha, she was a twin!’ It’s a complication that is introduced in the middle that leads to greater challenges in the story.. That’s why we got away with it.” says The Wrap.
Here’s how the director describes the risk of introducing the character of Helen so late: “You introduce a character that you love and invest emotionally in looking back on the first half where you perceived him as something else, knowing deep in your brain that we have to arrive at the scene in what is about to be shot, and then we see it all from their point of view. I think that’s when I show my cards. And in that sense the biggest risk becomes to spend the first half of the film without it. It’s like we did the first half of the first film without introducing Marta (Ana de Armas). What scared me the most is, would the audience care about Helen when we introduced her after spending so much time with this terrible group of people? And at that point, it was a bit of trial and error to evaluate how much we repeated. How long could the audience stand to see the same thing again? It all boils down to pacing, which is work that happens in any film, but the calculation is slightly different because doing it a second time also affects the experience of the viewer.”.
Sixth best movie opening on Netflix
‘Knives in the back: the mystery of the glass onion’ is enjoying success, at least according to Netflix itself. The company assures that it has accumulated more than 82.1 million hours on the streaming platform during its first week, a stupendous figure but one that Only worth the sixth best feature film opening on Netflix. ‘Red Alert’ continues to be the highest debuting film on the platform with 148.72 million hours.
