One of the strangest, most innovative, most controversial and most cutting-edge genres of art, it has always been science fiction, stories as fanciful or realistic as they come. Now, thousands of Letterboxd fans and users have voted for the best sci-fi movies of all time, leaving a list few could see coming, with some pretty impressive titles.

With more than a thousand votes, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ remains in sixth place in the best sci-fi movies of all time. Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece has been ranked in many lists as the most important piece of science fiction in the history of cinema, even though, over the years, he has also earned many detractors for all intents and purposes of him. The thing

With fifth position and a rating of 4.3 out of 5, one of the the most acclaimed sci-fi films, ‘The thing’. Directed by John Carpenter in 1982, the story starring Kurt Russell was a watershed for genre cinema, moreover with touches of terror, and those special effects which, even in modern times, continue to be a point of reference for whoever. Without a doubt, one of best sci-fi movies which came out of the soviet union, and which has little or nothing to do with the ways of hollywood is ‘Stalker’. A 1979 film, directed by Andrei Tarkovski, and which was encouraged to be a cryptic and complex story, at levels that the genre had rarely dared, is now a major piece of cinema history, with a rating of 4.4 out of letterboxd. It’s not streaming.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

It was clear that if it was some of the most important works for science fiction, it had to be ‘Star: Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’. The film by George Lucas that changed people’s perception of science fiction, which was previously meant for geeks or intellectuals, and which has become a worldwide phenomenon, and which is still a success today. Available on Disney+.

The end of Evangelion

Oddly enough, the end of Hideaki Anno’s masterpiece appears on some of the best-of-the-genre lists, but ‘The End of Evangelion’ was a piece that changed not only the history of anime, but of art in general. The end that the animated series could never have, became a magnificent film that closed the entire story arc of Shinji Ikari in the most twisted way possible. Available on Netflix.

Everything everywhere all at once

And finally, what was the best sci-fi film of 2022 manages to sneak among the best of the genre, in history. ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, by “Daniels”, produced by A24, was an unexpected surprise, from all points of view. A story that combines action, terror, fantasy, drama and science fiction, with such ease that it even seems simple. Available on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and Claro.
