Happy Christmas! In its second week on the bill, ‘Avatar: The Water Sense’ continues unstoppable. The sequel directed by James Cameron continues adamant in the first position of the Spanish box office, adding an impressive 3.6 million euros in the weekend of December 23 to 25, according to Comscore data. The film has already exceeded 17 million euros in our country in just 11 days, accumulating over 2 million admissions since its premiere.
After having achieved the best premiere in Spain since 2019 with more than 7.3 million euros of openings and a record number of 1,983 screens in preview in our country, ‘El sentido del agua’ decreased by 52% compared to the week of its release , which caused the total box office to be cut by almost half as well. Of the triumphant €8.87m the combined top 20 took last week, total funding drops to €4.8m. It makes sense, given that, currently, the box office corresponds almost entirely to the Na’vi, leaving a very small percentage to be distributed among the other proposals in theaters. If “Avatar” goes down, the box office goes down.

The only one who managed to get some claws out of the sequel to the highest grossing film in history is “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”. We already know that animated family films have a lot of influence on the billboard and the also late sequel to the spin-off ‘Shrek’ opens in second place, even if it does so at a great distance from ‘Avatar’ and with a rather modest result: 558,386 euros and an average per cinema of 1,543 euros, against 9,247 for ‘El sentido del agua’, which monopolizes most of the cinemas and sessions in Spain.
‘A todo tren 2’ dropped from 2 to 3, but withstood tough competition, with €221,093 more than a total of €3.9m. In fourth place debuts ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, the biopic on Whitney Houston, which earns less than half of the Spanish film (103,000 euros) on release in almost as many theaters. It definitely doesn’t look like the movie musical will repeat the success of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
‘As bestas’ and ‘El menú each drop by one position, reaching 5 and 6 respectively. The Spaniard, who is already in his seventh week of success, adds 89,609 euros to a total that already rises to 3.28 million, while the black comedy distributed by Disney/20th Century Studios adds 47,552 euros after a month on the bill, for a total of 1.24 million. The biggest drop of the week is played by “Mundo Extraño”. Disney’s latest animated film is down 85%, from 3 to 7, which makes sense considering its streaming premiere on Dec. 23.
‘Broker’ closes the top 10 at 8, another premiere sneaking in with €30,046 in just 63 theaters, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, up 6 to 9 in its seventh week and close to 7.5 million to date , and ‘The fourth passenger’, which drops two places to 10 and has 4.3 million euros in 9 weeks.
Little competition in sight
at the pace that goes, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ is once again guaranteed number 1 next week, especially considering the little competition that awaits it. The last week of the year will bring us the latest from Tom Hanks, ‘The Worst Neighbor in the World’, the acclaimed drama ‘Uncovered’, about the Harvey Weinstein case, the Spanish thriller ‘Everybody Does It’ and animation ( and also Spanish) “Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow” and the horror film “Pray for the Devil”, among other releases that pose no threat to the Na’vi.
