Dan Harmon Talks Film COMMUNITY & Reveals What Storylines Fans Can Barely See

One of the things fans loved the most about the Community series were the constant pop culture references throughout the show that were often infused into the storylines. The series even created its own nostalgia within the show when it would make a memorable episode and return to the same type of story in future episodes. This leaves fans wondering what we can expect to see in the future Community movie, and while creator Dan Harmon he’s keeping his lips tight on what we’re going to see, he’s given us a good idea of what we’re not going to see in the film.

In a recent interview on Six Seasons and a Podcast, Harmon explained:

“It’s much easier for me to shut things out than it is to tell you what we’re pursuing. For example, say, “Do we really think it would be a good idea to be a paintball episode?” It’s one of the first things to shut out because it’s the first thing that comes to mind, and that’s a problem with the concept of “Community” movies. We’ve done a lot of episodes where you’re gleefully locked into a construct that isn’t traditional sitcom storytelling, but is rather through the lens of David Fincher or Martin Scorsese. There were a lot of special episodes that were kind of genre homages. The paintball thing was one of them. We tried to do loads more paintballs, and they were all perfectly wonderful things to do, but would anything ever capture the joy of the original paintball episode?

Harmon added that the increase in school shootings would also make it difficult to report paintball fights, he also excluded the popular Dungeons & Dragons episodes that were highlights during Communitythe life.

“You’re running around with guns in a school, which was never a good idea on TV even then. How can we do this in an acceptable way? You sit down to write the movie and you’re like, ‘So, we’d do it right?’ Because it’s so emblematic of what made our show special and the triumphs that we’ve had, the things that we’ve contributed as a show. Or we played Dungeons & Dragons for 90 minutes. I have to rule that out, maybe a better writer wouldn’t.

Also on the podcast, Harmon revealed that the Community the movie won’t return to a closed Greendale in the time since the end of season 6 in 2015. Nor will it take place during a one-night reunion between the characters.

“You’re not going to do anything particularly clever using the end or resurrection of school as a gimmick because you don’t want too much of your film spent unrecognizable,” he said. “It wouldn’t be outlandish to suggest that enough time has passed in ‘Community’ that the world, and not these characters, has changed so significantly that there’s a lot to deal with. They haven’t been together for a long time, but it’s not because they swore by each other…there’s a reason to be together and there’s a reason why they have to be together.

We don’t yet know when this movie will be filmed or released, but it’s so exciting it’s official! We will keep you updated on the development of the film. What textures would you like to see in the Community movie?
