Universal Pictures has announced that their next Dracula movie will star Nicolas Cage is getting an R rating. Renfield officially received an R rating from the MPAA for “bloody violence, some gore, language everywhere, and some drug use.”
The producer of the film, creator of The walking dead, Robert KirkmannHe has previously said that the new Dracula adaptation will be “funny” and “extremely violent,” so that’s not a big shock.
The film stars stars Nicholas Hoult (Warm bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road), Awkwafina (The farewell, Shang-Chi), Nicolas Cage (Raising Arizona, Mandy), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Amusement), Adrian Martinez (Focus), and Bess Rous (ghost Buster).
In the film, Hoult plays Dracula’s wanton henchman, RM Renfield. In the original Dracula novel, Renfield was an inmate in an asylum who is thought to suffer from delusions but is actually a servant of Dracula. The film is believed to take place in the present day, and in it, Renfield decides to leave that life behind after falling in love with a traffic cop.
Cage has previously shared the inspiration behind his version of the character, explaining that it will be a mix of David Bowie and his late father, August Coppola. He said, “I’m trying to be the Thin White Duke to Dracula,” which refers to the character Bowie adopted in the mid-1970s, which was partly inspired by the character he played in The man who fell to earth.
Renfield will be released in theaters on April 14, 2023.
