Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies recently held a props auction called ” Icons and idols: Hollywood, and the results of that auction have been disclosed. As you will see, some movie fans have paid big money for some of these props!
The mechatronic model of ET from Steven Spielberg’S ET The extraterrestrial sold for a staggering $2,560,000! It’s just insane to me that there are people out there with that kind of money to throw at a collectible movie. Some of the other props sold include:
Charlton Hestonit’s iconic Ten Commandments “Holy Staff” sold for $448,000, twenty-two times its original estimate.
Marilyn MonroeFamous 1950s wardrobe worn in photographs with Arthur Miller and Yves Montand: Her classic black wool suit and white sleeveless sundress sold for $256,000 each, and the photo-matched pearl gray silk dress sold for $224,000 .
Marilyn Monroe’s handwritten personal papers: black “record” journal with handwritten personal notes sold for $87,500, Gucci brown leather personal address book sold for $64,000, and her only known communication with her father, greeting card from Stanley C. Gifford, sold for $31,250, fifteen times its original estimate.

There were over 1,300 artifacts from the greatest films of Hollywood’s Golden Age and today’s greatest and most popular contemporary films spanning sci-fi, action and fantasy classics and beyond. Here is the press release with further details:
The most anticipated moment of the event auction was the sale of the main item, the ET the extraterrestrial The Hero “No. 1” mechatronic movie model “actor” who brought the eponymous character to life in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic ET The Extra Terrestrial sold for a staggering $2,560,000. Anticipating modern technology and CGI effects, the one-of-a-kind cinematic relic (built in 1981) features 85 motion points and is considered a masterpiece of engineering, created by “The Father of ET”, Carlo Rambaldi, the Italian Master of the Oscar-winning special effects, designer and mechatronics expert. Another highlight of the 1982 masterpiece sold this weekend was the original ET maquette model made for Steven Spielberg to endorse the ET design which sold for $125,000, a Kuwahara BMX bike used by the film’s character ‘Greg’ is sold for $115,200, over three times its original estimate of $30,000.
Another exciting highlight of the auction was the reappearance of an original “holy staff” from the Cecille B. DeMille classic Ten Commandments, used by Charlton Heston in his portrayal of Moses, which brought in a staggering $448,000, over twenty times its original estimate of $20,000. Heston used this prop in the iconic parting of the Red Sea scene, a special effects marvel of the era.
Over 175 rare and one-of-a-kind items from Marilyn Monroe’s personal archives were auctioned off Saturday, including wardrobes, personal care items, receipts, documents and beauty products. Among the many iconic pieces sold was a black wool dress with spaghetti straps and a zipper back worn in several photographs taken by friend and business partner Milton Greene on January 28, 1955, which fetched a staggering $256,000. Another significant piece, a white textured cotton sleeveless sundress worn by Marilyn in the series of photographs taken of her and Arthur Miller in New York City in 1956, sold for a staggering $256,000. A pearl gray silk dress that belonged personally to Marilyn and was a prototype for the dress made for her film Let’s Make Love, with a spot on her right breast matching the photo, as evident in a photograph showing Marilyn sitting next to the co -star Yves Montand brought in $224,000. Marilyn Monroe’s black “cellophane effect” evening gown inspired by Mae West from her classic film, The Seven Year Itch, also sold for $56,250.
A surprising highlight uncovered at this auction of Marilyn Monroe’s personal archives was the discovery of a get well greeting card from Marilyn Monroe’s father, Stanley C. Gifford, which sold for $31,250, fifteen times its original estimate of $2,000. . The card is the only known communication written by the star’s long-lost parent to her famous daughter since their first and only known meeting. Marilyn’s other handwritten personal papers sold include her black “record” journal with handwritten personal notes sold for $87,500, four times its original estimate of $20,000, and Gucci brown leather personal address book sold for $64,000 .

Marvel Cinematic Universe props sold for numbers as legendary as their heroes, including: An original “Mjolnir” hero hammer used by “Thor” played by Chris Hemsworth in Thor: The Dark World, breaking the auction podium at $115,200; by Chris Evans Captain America: The First Avenger the hero’s “Vibranium” shield which sold for $102,400 as well as his other shield in the film which sold for $38,400; Hayley Atwell’s shield helix used as her character, Captain Carter Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which sold for $64,000; Don Cheadle’s original Iron Patriot helmet used in Iron Man 3 that sold for $51,200; a repulsor gauntlet worn by Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. in Iron man 2 that sold for $32,000; and more.
Flying from magic and fantasy Harry Potter film series was the hero broom “Nimbus 2000” made for “Harry Potter” in the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which sold for a staggering $128,000. Other highlights include Ralph Fiennes’ “Lord Voldemort” hero wand sold for $76,800; a pair of glasses purchased for the movie star Daniel Radcliff for the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for $35,200 and an original Gryffindor wool overcoat and the iconic red and yellow Gryffindor scarf worn by Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets sold for $32,000.
