Donald Trump Says United States Also Needs Patriot Missiles

US President Donald Trump responded to a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for Patriot anti-ballistic missiles by saying the United States also needs them. Speaking at a White House event, Trump stated that the United States wants missiles for its own inventory.

Trump claimed that former US President Joe Biden had provided Ukraine with 300 billion dollars in ammunition. Trump said American military reserves were full when he left office after his first presidential term, but Biden had given much of the equipment away. Zelenskyy has previously denied Trump's claims that Ukraine received hundreds of billions of dollars in aid from the United States.

Casualties and Peace Talks

Trump confirmed he is aware that Russia is carrying out attacks against civilians. He said the United States is not involved in the conflict because an ocean separates the countries. However, Trump stated that he dislikes seeing 25,000 young people die each month, noting that Russia and Ukraine suffer an average of 25,000 monthly casualties, mostly soldiers.

Trump added that the United States is working to settle the war and believes progress is being made. He described the conflict as a very brutal war marked by strong hatred between Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, before concluding his remarks to the media.

Stockpiles and Interceptor Supplies

At the same White House event, Trump denied that the United States military faces a weapons shortage during its war with Iran. He acknowledged that supplies of certain types of weapons are tighter, but asserted that stocks are replenished daily.

On August 5, the Financial Times reported, citing sources, that Trump had refused to supply Ukraine with additional Patriot missiles. On the same day, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had been receiving roughly three times fewer anti-ballistic missiles since the start of 2026. Zelenskyy expressed belief that partners reduced interceptor deliveries to exert political pressure on Ukraine to make the country more compliant.
