US President Donald Trump has instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back upcoming joint military exercises with South Korea, citing his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that he was dissatisfied with the long-standing agreement to participate in the maneuvers. He explained that it was now too late to cancel the drills entirely, prompting his instruction to Hegseth to reduce their scope.
Trump argued that the drills carry a high financial cost, with the United States traditionally paying a major share of the expenses. He added that the maneuvers send an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea, claiming the country posed no threat during his presidency and had always demonstrated respect toward the United States.
The president also revealed a recent conversation with the president of South Korea. Trump said he had asked the South Korean leader whether the country would join US efforts regarding the denuclearisation of Iran, but the offer was declined.
Alliance history and upcoming maneuvers
Joint military exercises serve as a cornerstone of the defense alliance between Washington and Seoul. The security partnership dates back to 1953, when the two nations signed the Mutual Defense Treaty following the active hostilities of the Korean War.
The upcoming round of military exercises is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 27, 2026. Official objectives for the training include strengthening the defensive readiness of allied forces and deterring nuclear and missile threats originating from North Korea. This year's drills are designed to integrate lessons learned from recent modern conflicts, focusing specifically on tactical shifts by the North Korean military.
North Korean condemnation and arms race warning
North Korea has strongly condemned the planned exercises. Citing reports from state news agency KCNA, Bloomberg noted that Pyongyang accused the United States of provoking a new nuclear arms race in the region.
North Korea stated that it reserves the right to reinforce its military capabilities to counter external threats. Officials in Pyongyang declared that they would not accept what they described as a serious confrontational situation created by the United States and its allies. North Korea also voiced opposition to proposed revisions to US nuclear strategy.
Strait of Hormuz and foreign policy remarks
The announcement comes alongside other recent foreign policy remarks from the White House. Trump previously claimed that following the conclusion of conflict against Iran, the United States would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as American territory.
