Diver Michael Packard Survives Trapped in Whale's Mouth

Commercial diver Michael Packard survived after unexpectedly ending up inside the mouth of a humpback whale while diving off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in June 2021. Packard remained conscious throughout the entire ordeal and reached the surface with minor injuries, Hungarian media outlet Hamu és Gyémánt reported.

Packard estimated that the entire encounter inside the giant marine mammal lasted between 30 and 40 seconds before the animal shook its head near the water's surface and ejected him.

On 11 June 2021, Packard traveled to Provincetown alongside his diving partner, Josiah Mayo, to conduct commercial harvesting work. Packard, who has worked in the waters off Cape Cod for more than 30 years, relies on scuba equipment to submerge to the sea floor and collect crustaceans by hand.

During his third dive of the day, Packard reached a depth of approximately 14 meters when he suddenly felt a heavy blow, followed immediately by total darkness. He initially suspected a shark attack, but realized within seconds that he was inside a whale after feeling no bite marks or teeth.

The force of the initial impact knocked the breathing apparatus out of Packard's mouth. He managed to retrieve the regulator, replace it, and resume breathing under water, though he was so tightly wedged inside the creature's mouth that he could hardly move. Shortly after, he felt the whale swim upward toward the surface.

Unexpected encounter at sea

Mayo, who remained aboard their boat, initially observed a sudden surge of water before spotting his partner floating nearby. Mayo pulled Packard onto the vessel, and the injured diver was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Packard sustained injuries primarily to his legs, though medical examinations confirmed he suffered no broken bones. Given that he came into direct physical contact with an animal weighing tens of tonnes, the physical outcome proved remarkably minimal.

Cape Cod, a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean from eastern Massachusetts, is home to rich marine ecosystems where baleen whales gather during summer feeding seasons. Fin whales and humpback whales feed by expanding their jaws to gulp vast quantities of ocean water containing small fish and crustaceans. Packard accidentally positioned himself directly in the path of the whale's feeding maneuver.

Biological structure prevents these large whales from swallowing a human being. Despite possessing massive jaws, a whale's throat is far too narrow to allow an adult person to pass through. The bulky diving equipment and air tank Packard wore provided an additional physical barrier that made swallowing impossible.

Return to the ocean

Although some skeptics later questioned the extraordinary story, Mayo confirmed seeing Packard surface right beside the whale. Packard maintained that the animal had no intention of attacking him and had simply scooped him up by accident while engulfing sea life.

Just a few weeks after the harrowing experience, Packard fully recovered and returned to his work gathering crustaceans in the coastal waters off Cape Cod.
